time to pretend

flickr is being a bit ridiculous. the program works well enough, but they’re putting on some restrictions that really oughtn’t be there in the first place.

my father swung through town this memorial day weekend, and we took lunch together on saturday at a minneapolis staple, peter’s grill.

classy joint

the whole thing was started by peter atcas, a greek immigrant, in 1914. and since then the restaurant has been traipsing around from location to location in minneapolis for nearly a century. the decor looks untouched since then, which is a refreshing contrast up against the glass and steel coat the rest of the city wears. it’s a damn ugly downtown, imo. i’d much rather be amidst the brick and stone of st paul or chicago or new york.

the niche that peter’s fills is a well-played hand. all the food is “homemade,” meaning it’s greasy and fattening beyond forgiveness. i could’ve greased my bike for a year with their vegetable soup. then shot a season of family double dare. however, as with all eateries of this nature, it’s forgiven because things have been this way forever. it’s like a kid that doesn’t know any better, forgiving an elderly gent for farting in public, or allowing an old woman to be as racist as she wants. all is forgiven with the extremely old and naively young.

but it’s nice. walking into the diner and being transported is fun, especially for an escapist as myself. i always hear about actors in a period piece getting into character once they’re in wardrobe and on set. it works well enough here, but hopefully i’ll get to experience it firsthand one day. until then, i’ll just avoid the food and play pretend.
